Now the weather has warmed up and our road gritting lorries and trailers are being serviced, cleaned and made ready for the next winter, we thought we should reflect on the winter season just gone and highlight the facts and figures that showcase our successful road and car park gritting season.
How far did our gritting lorries travel?
To put some of the facts and figures into perspective, we’ve made comparisons and you’ll be amazed at some of the results! For example, during the season our road gritting lorries travelled an incredible 64,516 miles. Using the tried and tested “football pitch” comparison, that is the length of 1,000,000 football pitches! Or 850 times as long as Hadrian’s Wall and 950 times the across the English Channel!
How much road and car park grit did we use?
Overall we used a colossal 1,500 tonnes of grit throughout the season. Again using the tried and tested comparison of an “elephant”, it amounts to 200 times the weight of an average adult elephant. Alternatively, we used 14 ½ times the weight of a Blue Whale. Amazingly, it also amounts to 6,500 times the weight of a cubic metre of snow!
Due to our extensive planning last year, we now have 600 tonnes of grit ready for the next season. This means that our stocks of grit for the coming winter is ahead of schedule and we will be able to purchase a smaller quantity for the remaining amounts needed for this year.
How many road and car park gritting visits did we make?
All of this road gritting activity resulted in us conducting 11,233 site visits throughout the season. A great comparison is that is 40 times more than the number of manned flights in to space! This averaged out at 43 site visits a week with only 2 as reactive emergency visits. This low number of emergency road gritting visits is testament to planning well at the start of the season. Overall the number of call outs this season was an increase of 4,263 from the previous year. We are very proud of our continued growth and proving we are one of Hertfordshire’s best road and car park gritting companies.
As part of our commitment to the environment, we ensure that the vast majority of our road gritting lorries are fitted with Euro 5 Emissions Standard engines. We strongly believe in limiting our environmental impact as far as we can.
